Can AppleCare+ be renamed by reselling or transferring Apple products such as Mac?

You joined AppleCare+ when you bought your Mac, but later sold or transferred your Mac.

If so, can AppleCare+ be renamed? This section explains.

The following article is for Japan. Please note that the situation may differ depending on other countries such as the United States.

 

AppleCare+ Basic Rules

About AppleCare+ for Mac, it is written on the following Apple official website, but I will quote the important part.

Every Mac comes with one year of hardware repair coverage through its limited warranty and up to 90 days of complimentary technical support. AppleCare+ for Mac extends your coverage from your AppleCare+ purchase date and adds up to two incidents of accidental damage protection every 12 months, each subject to a service fee of $99 for screen damage or external enclosure damage, or $299 for other damage, plus applicable tax. In addition, you’ll get 24/7 priority access to Apple experts by chat or phone.

It’s a little confusing, so I’ll summarize it in a table.

In addition, how to subscribe to AppleCare+ is written as follows.

  1. Purchase AppleCare+ with your new Mac.
  2. Or buy it within 60 days of your Mac purchase:

    ・At an Apple Store (inspection of Mac and proof of purchase are required)

If you are worried, you should include it for mental stability, as you will not be able to join even if you like it or not more than 60 days after purchase.

 

Regarding transfer and cancellation, the terms and conditions include the following.

10. Transfer of Plan

For Fixed-Term Plans only, and excluding any Plans paid for directly by a Plan Payment Provider, you may make a one-time permanent transfer of all of your rights under the Plan to another party, provided that: (i) you transfer to the other party the original proof of purchase, the Plan Confirmation, the Plan’s printed materials and this service contract; (ii) you notify Apple of the transfer as instructed at support.apple.com/en-us/HT202712, and (iii) the other party accepts the terms of this service contract. If you financed the purchase of your Plan through a Plan Payment Provider or otherwise pay monthly, the transferee must assume and comply with all payment obligations of the transferor, and any failure to do so by a transferee shall immediately trigger the applicable cancellation provisions as described in Section 9. 9. Cancellation

9.1 Your Cancellation Rights

Regardless of your method of purchase, you may cancel this Plan at any time for any reason.

(a) Cancellations with the return of your Covered Device:

Regardless of your Plan type, to cancel this Plan with the return of your Covered Device, go to the original sales channel of your Covered Device purchase (whether a Reseller or Apple). You (or your Plan Payment Provider as the case may be) will receive a full Plan refund.

(b) All other cancellations:

(i) For Annual Plans:

To cancel an Annual Plan, you may:

(A) Turn off your next Annual Plan renewal through your billing platform. You may also have the option to turn off Annual renewal billing directly on your Covered Device; or

(B) Call your billing provider (whether a Reseller or Apple) to cancel your Annual Plan.

Unless local law provides otherwise, in either case, your cancellation may be deferred until midnight on the last day of the year for which your last Annual Plan payment was paid. Your Annual Plan will remain active until the end of that year at which point it will be cancelled and no cancellation refund will be provided. For an immediate cancellation of your Annual Plan, you must call your billing provider (whether a Reseller or Apple). You will receive a pro-rata refund based on the percentage of unexpired time remaining in your Annual Plan Term, less the value of any service provided to you under the Plan.

Your failure to timely and fully make any annual payment will be deemed an expression of your intent to cancel your Plan and no cancellation refund will be provided.

(ii) For Fixed-Term Plans:

To cancel a Fixed-Term Plan, call Apple at the number listed below, or send written notice with your Plan Agreement Number to Agreement Administration, MS: 217-AC, 2511 Laguna Blvd, Elk Grove, CA 95758, U.S. You must send a copy of the Plan’s original proof of purchase with your notice.

Unless local law provides otherwise, cancellation refunds will be provided as follows:

(A) Within thirty (30) days of your Plan’s purchase, or receipt of this Plan, whichever occurs later, you will receive a full refund less the value of any service provided under the Plan.

(B) More than thirty (30) days after your receipt of this Plan, you will receive a pro-rata refund of the original purchase price. The pro-rata refund is based on the percentage of unexpired Plan Term from the Plan’s date of purchase, less the value of any service provided to you under the Plan.

If your Fixed-Term Plan is financed through a Plan Payment Provider, contact your Plan Payment Provider to cancel your Plan. Apple may return any refund owed to the financing entity who paid Apple for your Plan

(c) Cancellations in connection with a group or membership program:

If you receive your AppleCare+ Plan (regardless of type) as part of a group or membership program, upon expiration or termination of your right to continue AppleCare+ under such program, you may have the option to assume payment for AppleCare+ and continue your Plan. If you do not elect to assume payment and continue AppleCare+, your Plan will be cancelled and you will have no right to any refund.

9.2 Apple’s Cancellation Rights

If your Payment Source cannot be charged for any reason for amounts due, including for any Annual Plan renewal payment or installment payment owed by you, and you have not otherwise made the appropriate payment by the due date or any applicable renewal date, your Plan may be cancelled for nonpayment and your Plan coverage will cease from the due date or renewal date.

Additionally, unless applicable local law provides otherwise, Apple may cancel this Plan for fraud or material misrepresentation, or if service parts for the Covered Equipment are not available, upon sixty (60) days’ prior written notice. If local law permits and Apple cancels this Plan for the unavailability of service parts, you will receive a pro rata refund for the unexpired Plan Term.

9.3 Effect of Cancellation

Upon the effective date of early cancellation, Apple’s future obligations under this Plan to you are fully extinguished.

Based on the above, I will explain “what kind of procedure is necessary” based on actual experience.

 

Two options for selling or transferring your Mac

Well, here is the main part of this article.

Actually, I will write based on what I investigated when I sold the MacBook Pro I bought in Japan in 2018 at the Yahoo Japan auction in 2019.

When I asked an Apple representative when I was doing the procedure, I heard that the procedure was changed from time to time.

Sure, I looked up the Apple Care + process when selling a Mac online, but there were some that were old and didn’t fit the current procedure.

So, I hope people who read this article will think, “This was the way to go in 2019. When you do the procedure, let’s check the latest procedure and proceed with the work.”

For the latest procedure, call Apple Support and check with your Apple  representative.

That’s the right way to go.

 

Although the introduction has become long, there are two options when selling a Mac.

  • AppleCare+ name change
  • Cancellation / refund of AppleCare+

This time, what I actually did was change the name.

As mentioned in the terms of the previous section, you can only change your name once.

 

Each procedure is explained below.

AppleCare+ name change

If you subscribe to AppleCare+, it will be managed by being linked to the serial number of your Mac.

In addition, the Mac owner’s “name, address, phone number, email address” is also linked.

If you need repairs after selling your Mac, call the Apple Store / bring it to the Apple Store / bring it to an authorized service provider and try to use Apple Care+, the person in charge said, “Please show me your identity verification documents.” Is told.

AppleCare+ is tied to the owner of the Mac!

At this time, if you have changed the name of AppleCare+, you can show the license of the current owner (yourself), but if you have not changed the name, copy the license of the previous owner etc. You need to get it and present it.

You don’t want to do it personally, right?

So, before you go through the process, look for the “AppleCare+ Registration Form” that Apple should have sent you when you subscribed to AppleCare+.

The information required for the procedure is as follows.

  • Information when purchasing a Mac
    • Mac serial number (listed on AppleCare+ registration)
    • When purchasing from the online Apple store, the order number (starting with W and the remaining 9 digits), when purchasing from other than that, the last 4 digits of the credit card at the time of payment
  • Information when joining AppleCare+
    • AppleCare+ contract number (listed on AppleCare+ registration)
  • Personal information of the new owner of the Mac
    • Full name
    • Address including zip code
    • telephone number
    • email address

 

Once you have the above information, you will finally be able to complete the name change procedure.

You can only change your name by calling Apple Support.

After requesting a transfer of ownership over the phone, the new owner will be emailed an AppleCare+ registration within 24 hours.

With the above, the name change of AppleCare+ is completed.

 

AppleCare+ Cancellation / refund

I didn’t do this at my time, but he said he would cancel AppleCare+ and refund the remaining period to the designated account.

The procedure has many parts in common with the name change, but first look for the “AppleCare+ Registration Form” that should have been sent by email from Apple when you subscribed to AppleCare+.
